Giraffe Pictures
Giraffes are the most amazing and bizarre animals. Giraffes look like a type of buck, but they have this extremely long neck! Although they don’t look that big, when you stand next to a giraffe, a man will come up to the top of its legs! Giraffe are often found individually, yet they are also found in groups of two to twenty individuals. They exhibit individual and herd like behavior. Although male and female giraffe look very similar there is a way to tell the two apart. Do you have any idea? If you look at the horns of a giraffe, male giraffe have a bald spot, while female giraffe have tufty horns! Now there is an interesting bit of information about giraffe!
Another incredibly feat of nature is in the design of the giraffe neck. When a giraffe drinks, it spreads its legs out and then lowers its neck. Thus, its head is well below its heart. Now if you put your head down maybe half a meter below your heart you start feeling faint, as all the blood rushes to your head. Giraffes have a series of seven one way valves in the arteries in their neck, ensuring that not too much blood flows to their heads when they drink. If it was not for this, they would pass out every time they had to drink, which is at least once per day!
It is very difficult to get good giraffe pictures. This is mainly because of a giraffe’s shape. Giraffe pictures are almost always in a portrait format, but it is difficult to get the composition correct. If you can get multiple giraffe together, their shapes and necks, often make for an interesting pattern and this can lead to excellent giraffe pictures. Again, when taking giraffe pictures, ensure that it is early morning or late evening, as this is the best lighting for color saturation. Their fur is an interesting texture, and this makes for great pictures. If you have the chance, try and take your giraffe pictures on foot. These pictures are very difficult to get as giraffe are extremely cautious animals, and tend to run away when they see you. Personally, one of my favorite things to do in the bushveld is to quietly get out of the vehicle and crawl slowly up to a giraffe. They normally have this confused expression. This is when I suddenly sprint full speed at the giraffe. I then get to see the acceleration of a giraffe! I make sure that I am far away from its back legs so that it can’t kick me.
Anyways, those are a couple of anecdotal experiences and a few ideas for your next photo safari. We trust that you will have some excellent giraffe pictures. Please add these pictures to this blog.
